Outdoor furniture that stands up to salt and sun in Mallorca
Share
On a Mallorca terrace, furniture works harder than almost anywhere in northern Europe. Ultraviolet light is intense from spring to autumn, sea air carries salt far inland, summer heat dries timber and fabrics, and autumn storms can bring heavy rain in a single afternoon. Houses near the coast face all of this at once. Choosing the right materials – and caring for them simply – makes the difference between furniture that looks settled after five years and furniture that needs replacing after two.
What the climate does to furniture
- Sun: UV fades colours, dries out natural fibres and makes low-grade plastics brittle.
- Salt: salt deposits attract moisture and accelerate corrosion of unprotected metals, screws and fittings.
- Heat: dark surfaces become too hot to touch in summer; timber moves as it dries.
- Rain and humidity: water trapped in cushions or joints leads to mould and staining, especially in houses closed for winter.
Materials that work on the island
Teak
Teak is naturally rich in oils, which help it resist water and rot. Left untreated, it weathers to a soft silver-grey within a season or two; this is a surface change, not damage. If you prefer the original honey tone, clean and oil or seal it once or twice a year. Recycled teak behaves in a similar way and often has a more characterful surface. Teak is our first choice for dining tables and lounge frames that stay outside.
Powder-coated aluminium
Aluminium does not rust and is light enough to move easily, which makes it practical for chairs and sun loungers. Choose a good powder-coated finish and rinse it with fresh water from time to time, especially near the sea. Lighter colours stay cooler in the sun than black or anthracite.
Rope and synthetic weaves
Outdoor rope and woven synthetic fibres such as olefin (polypropylene) dry quickly after rain or a swim and are pleasant to sit on. They are often combined with teak or aluminium frames. Choose solution-dyed fibres, which hold their colour better in strong sun, and rinse them occasionally to remove salt and sun cream.
Recycled plastic lumber
Furniture made from high-density recycled plastic lumber, often sold under trade names, is heavy, very weather-resistant and needs almost no maintenance. It does not splinter or need oiling, and it works well for exposed pool areas and rentals. The look is more solid and less natural than wood.
Ceramics, terracotta and stone
Glazed ceramic and stone tabletops, side tables and planters suit the Mediterranean setting and are unaffected by sun. Unglazed terracotta can crack if water freezes in it, which is rare at the coast but possible inland in winter. Very heavy pieces stay put in strong wind.
Outdoor rugs and cushions
Outdoor rugs in polypropylene or similar synthetic fibres can be rinsed with a hose and dried flat in the sun. Cushions should have quick-drying foam and removable covers in solution-dyed outdoor fabric. Even so, cushions and rugs last much longer if they are brought in during heavy rain and over winter.
Covered or exposed?
A porch or pergola changes everything. Upholstered outdoor sofas and natural-fibre pieces last longest under cover. For fully exposed areas around the pool, prefer teak, aluminium, recycled plastic lumber and ceramics, with cushions that can be stored away. If your house is right on the sea, tell us before ordering and we will advise on finishes.
Shade, parasols and wind
Shade matters as much as the furniture itself. In July and August, a terrace without shade is barely usable between midday and late afternoon, and cushions and fabrics fade fastest in direct sun. A fixed pergola, an awning or large parasols make the space usable for longer and protect what stands underneath. Parasols need heavy, stable bases – afternoon breezes, and the tramuntana wind in the north of the island, can catch a canopy without warning – and should be closed whenever nobody is using them. For rentals, a simple note for guests (“please close the parasol when you leave the terrace”) prevents most damage.
Planning the terrace layout
Before choosing individual pieces, decide how the outdoor space will be used through the day. Most Mallorca terraces need three zones: a dining area close to the kitchen, a shaded lounge area for the afternoon and evening, and sun loungers by the pool. Allow at least 90 cm around a dining table so that chairs can be pulled out comfortably, and keep the paths to the pool and garden clear. Measure doorways, stairs and gates too: large outdoor sofas and stone tabletops are heavy, and access to roof terraces in older houses is often narrow. If you send us a plan or a few photos, we can check proportions and access before you order.
Simple maintenance through the year
- Spring: wash frames with mild soapy water, rinse well and, if you prefer, oil teak before the season.
- Summer: rinse aluminium and rope with fresh water every few weeks, especially near the sea; shake out and air cushions.
- Autumn: clean everything before storage; let cushions and rugs dry completely.
- Winter: store cushions, rugs and textiles indoors in a dry, ventilated place. Breathable covers protect frames that stay outside; avoid plastic sheeting that traps condensation.
For holiday rentals: practical choices
- Stackable chairs are easy to store, clean and replace, and they free up space when the terrace is used for other purposes.
- Enough seats: plan outdoor dining for the full occupancy of the house, plus lounge seating.
- Removable covers in neutral colours that can be washed or replaced individually.
- Heavy or anchored pieces for windy, exposed terraces.
- A clear end-of-season routine for your property manager: clean, dry, store and photograph.
